Configure SNMP trap Alert on Symantec Server Management Suite (SMS)

Symantec Server Management Suite (SMS) of the Symantec Management Platform supports SNMP trap alert management.

The following are the detailed steps to configure the SMS for SNMP trap alert management.

1. Log into the SMS management console, click 'Settings', expand 'Monitoring and Alerting' -> 'SNMP MIB Import Browser', select 'MIB Browser', then click 'Import MIB file':

2. Browse to and select the mib file and click 'Import' button:

3. Wait for several seconds, confirm the mib file imported successed, then click 'Close':

4. All the imported mib will be located under Unkonw category:

5. We need to add new category for these newly imported mib:

6. For example, we named it as SPE:

7. Click and drop the mib under Unknow into SPE:

8. Our mib imported and prepared. Simulate an alert on SPE and send the SNMP trap message to SMS, then confirm the message received in the Event Console:

9. Click to review the detailed information of this message, pay attention to the 'Category' and 'Definition' fields, because we need to create alerts based on these two fields:

10. We need to create a task to send email notification accordingly.

From the Management Console, click 'Manage' and select 'Jobs and Tasks':

11. Right click the 'Notification Server' in the left panel, select 'New' -> 'Task':

12. From the left panel, select 'Send E-mail', then fill in the nessary information for the email notification:

13. Save the email notification task accordingly:

14. Then we can configure alert base on the SNMP trap message and the newly added task.

From the Home page of the Management Console, select 'Monitoring and Alerting':

15. Expand 'Monitoring and Alerting' -> 'Event Console', select 'Alert Rule Settings', then select 'Task Rules' tab, click ‘Add' button:

16. Name the task rule, then click 'Add' button under 'Rule' section, then you can find out many fields that we can use to configure the rule:

17. Add two rules accordingly into the alert:

18. Under 'Task' section, click 'Add Existing':

19. From the left list, select 'Send E-mail to SPE Admin' which we created on step13, then click OK button:

20. Turn the alert into 'ON', and save the settings:

Then, if there are any SNMP trap message received in SMS, which the category is SPE and definition is systemAuthenticationError, a notification email will be send to the SPE admin accordingly.
